Hey their team startup.

My boss has asked me to assist him prepare for a conversation with prospective investors. We are currently chasing700k in capital raising which will be used to help build the team up and create a foundation for our current trajectory for business that we’ve calculated to expect for.

I’m coming to this community just to get some guidance from people that have injected capital into a start up or raised capital.

What are some of the hardest questions you’ve had to answer on the spot? What are some of the hardest questions you’ve asked? Is it appropriate to defer a question to get the specific answer to a question to answer st a later date once you’ve gathered the correct information? Or not? How much of the conversation is a fluffy sales speak and straight business talk?

Thanks very much. I’m super stoked to be given the opportunity to work with the boss on this. I don’t want to let him down.

  1. You should be researching the specific investors you intend to pitch to.
It’s important to know your audience.
Not all investors are created equal.
There are different types of investors:
    friends and family
    angel investors
    Venture Capitalists
    Private Equity
    Corporations
Even between individual investors within each group they have varied agendas, interests, and investment strategies.
    Learn them.
Develop your story around the specific investor. Speak to how they will benefit from investing in your company in more than just the return.
Speak to why they are the RIGHT investor for you based upon their network, experience, expertise, etc.
Is it appropriate to defer a question to get the specific answer to a question to answer st a later date once you’ve gathered the correct information?
Yes. Absolutely. You don’t need to have all the answers right then. It’s far more important to demonstrate how you can find the answers.
